Messi smiles again as he receives the Saint George’s Cross award
Messi the second footballer to receive it after Johan Cruyff in 2006. Lionel Messi was one of the recipients of the honour that was created in 1981 and that is one of the highest honours given out by the Catalan government.
Nevertheless, The Creu de Sant Jordi award – The Saint George’s Cross award, in English – has been given out to 28 people and 15 institutions in Barcelona.
Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and vice-president Jordi Cardoner and Jordi Mestre accompanied Messi to the event at the Forum CCIB centre.
The club put him forward for the award and it was agreed that Messi’s sporting achievements, charity work and contribution to Catalan society mean he deserved it.
